The Quarry

Pacifica, California

Action Outline

  • Conceptual Town Plan at request of key stakeholders
  • Design of Traditional Town Plan for abandoned quarry site
  • Inclusion of diverse housing and commercial building typologies
  • Development of emergent Town Center for greater Pacifica

The Quarry site has been in play for many years. We have worked with it on a number of occasions as well as with surrounding parcels that have since been developed.

This proposal was offered as a distinctive counterpoint to several Big Box proposals that were being developed. It was intended to redirect the dialogue towards town making and away from simple monoculture development equations.

Vision Outline

  • An assembly of narrow, human friendly streets in the scale and nature of traditional coastal towns.
  • Subdivision of developable properties such that "small lot" development and local ownership is encouraged.
  • Intensity strata that reflect clear understandings of center and periphery with genuine focus on the creation of a traditional Main Street.
  • Diversity of housing types that reflect their physical relation to both the center and the edge.
  • Preservation of key natural features while integrating those features into a carefully woven urban fabric.
  • Development of the hard quarry site as a public space, outdoor amphitheater and gateway to the natural areas remaining on the point.
