Continuation schools often are housed in portables at the back of an existing school site.
Our vision for Boynton was that of a dedicated high school campus with facilities equivalent to those at the main High School sites. This would result in increased sense of identity and dignity for these often challenged students, leading to increased ownership and investment by the students.
The results have demonstrated that design matters. This site has stayed cleaner, commanded more respect from students and generated fewer administrative and security problems than are typical for these facilities.
Additionally, the school has generated a tremendous sense of pride in the students who attend. These students are typically marginalized at the main high schools. Here, they have their own campus, their own colors, their own graduation on the new quad.
The project represented a substantial cost savings by using modular construction, partially constructed offsite, finished on site. Architecture was designed to reflect the quality of the other sites without being wasteful. No funds were spent on frivolous details, all resources were aimed at successful educational strategies and an architecture of dignity.
The resulting sense of pride and ownership on campus has had tangible results: higher test scores, improved student participation, more scholarships awarded, increased college continuation rates, and, in general, greater academic success.
Yes, we'll take credit for this one...
