Works Action List of Projects

San Mateo Transit Center

Action Outline

  • Public Charrette to develop concepts for the station area of downtown San Mateo, California
  • Development of selected design to emerge from charrette (with George Sinclair)
  • Public Presentation and dialogue initiation

Action Results

  • Final design of new Transit Center initiated and executed by city (final design by ROMA)
  • Project serves key role in redefining downtown and reorienting adjacent commercial and residential activity back toward train station.

The concept intends to recreate a substantial and durable train station as both functional component of downtown and iconic element of the rebirth of downtown. The station grounds are intended to eventually become part of a larger plaza around which substantial redevelopment is already occurring.

Additionally, as housing opportunities increase in downtown, the station will increasingly become a point of origin as well as destination. Dignified features and settings will further attract the urban market that seeks to live and work downtown while maintaining convenient regional access via an elegant and popular facility.

Project Features

  • Traditional form and style for structure and platforms
  • Key orientation to adjacent neighborhoods as gateway to downtown
  • Inclusion of small scale retail space to service passengers.
