Burlingame Square

Action Outline

  • Conceptual Design for Public Square at existing Historic Train station to recapture Historic Burlingame Square
  • Public presentations and dialogue initiation.
  • Individual dialogues and presentation to policy / opinion makers.
  • Dialogues with regional transit agency

Action Results:

  • City has initiated Phase 1 for Plaza development on west side of station.
  • City has resisted Transit agencies plans to further degrade the station area.
  • Citizen awareness of station area planning issues substantially increased.
  • Peripheral planning issues now focus on reconnecting town.
  • Pedestrian priorities have been re-established in downtown areas.

The concept represents the rebirth of the historic square that has been slowly chipped away by traffic concerns for 75 years. Engineers, planners and safety activists have slowly removed pedestrian and aesthetic amenities to the point that the square is effectively gone and the streets around it are dangerous to pedestrians.

The proposal reinvents the square as a public place to be utilized and celebrated, to house important social and civic activities that will recapture the neighborhood life once present about the train station.

The square is a key link between the vibrant downtown and Burlingame's beautiful Washington Park, as well as the historic High School.

The square will also become an important focal point as the symbolic center of town. In future years as rail transit increases it will likely become the functional center of town once again.

Key project features include:

  • The reconnection of downtown with the city's central park and the historic high school.
  • The creation of a substantial public plaza serving downtown and the adjacent residential areas to dignify train use and the entrance to town.
  • Preparation for future elevated rail and full reconnection of town on either side of tracks.
  • Traffic Repositioning and Calming to enhance neighborhood function
  • Increased pedestrian Access / Dignity
  • Critical Reconnection of Key Places
