The concept represents the rebirth of the historic square that has been slowly chipped away by traffic concerns for 75 years. Engineers, planners and safety activists have slowly removed pedestrian and aesthetic amenities to the point that the square is effectively gone and the streets around it are dangerous to pedestrians.
The proposal reinvents the square as a public place to be utilized and celebrated, to house important social and civic activities that will recapture the neighborhood life once present about the train station.
The square is a key link between the vibrant downtown and Burlingame's beautiful Washington Park, as well as the historic High School.
The square will also become an important focal point as the symbolic center of town. In future years as rail transit increases it will likely become the functional center of town once again.
